7mm Knee Sleeves: Stiffness & Fit

If one pair of 7mm sleeves has to cover your whole session, from warm-ups to top sets, start with a firm pair. Choose stiff if you mainly want them for heavy squat days and don't mind working harder to get them on. Then measure over the middle of your kneecap and find your size in our chart.

Firm or stiff?

7mm is the thickness of the neoprene, and the most the powerlifting rulebooks allow. It doesn't tell you how a sleeve will feel. The blend and density of the neoprene matter as much as the number, as Rehband's sleeve guide explains, so one 7mm pair can be much stiffer than another. Go by the feel each pair is sold as, not the thickness.

A smaller size won't necessarily give you more support. In one small trial, lifters squatted no more in sleeves a size smaller than in their recommended size, and a sleeve that's too tight is a struggle to get on and off.

Measure before you order

Brands measure in different places, so always use the chart for the sleeve you're buying. Ours works from the knee:

  1. Stand with your legs straight. That's the position our chart is based on.
  2. Wrap a tape over the middle of your kneecap. Keep it flat and read it in centimetres.
  3. Find your size in the table. Our chart says to size up between sizes, so 33 cm, the top of S, means M.
  4. Measure twice. We don't exchange sleeves for size, as our FAQ explains.
Knee sleeve sizes, measured over the middle of the kneecap
Size Knee measurement
S 30.5–33 cm
M 33–35.5 cm
L 35.5–38 cm
XL 38–40.5 cm
2XL 40.5–43 cm
3XL 43–45.5 cm
4XL 45.5–48 cm

The chart starts at S. The Sacrifice, Dawn and Wisdom Xtra-Stiff also come in XS, but we haven't published an XS range yet, so ask us before ordering if your knee measures under 30.5 cm. The full sleeve size chart is on our sizing page.

Getting stiff sleeves on

Stiff sleeves can take a few tries at first, even in the right size. This works for both types:

  1. Fold the top or bottom edge outward.
  2. Slide the sleeve over your foot and up to the calf.
  3. Hook your fingers inside the bottom edge and pull it over the knee. Use your fingers, not your thumbs.
  4. Unfold the edges and smooth out any wrinkles.

Finish by working the top edge up until your kneecap sits mid-sleeve.

Skip talc and plastic bags. If you need them, the sleeve is probably too small. To take stiff sleeves off, push them down rather than peeling them inside out.

How a good fit feels

  • Your kneecap sits around the middle of the sleeve.
  • The sleeve lies smooth, with no folds or bunching behind the knee.
  • It feels noticeably tighter than a sock without pinching or cutting off circulation.
  • It stays in place through a set instead of rolling down.

If it slides on without any effort, it's probably too big. If your foot tingles or goes numb, take it off straight away, because it's too small. A sleeve is training gear, not a treatment, so see a doctor or physiotherapist about knee pain that doesn't settle.

Competing in your sleeves

The IPF, USAPL, USPA and IPL all cap knee sleeves at 7 mm thick and 30 cm long, but meeting those numbers isn't the same as approval:

  • IPF: sleeves must also come from a maker on the IPF Approved List. Akinci isn't on it (checked October 2026), so our sleeves can't be used at IPF meets. Since 1 March 2026, another person may help you put sleeves on.
  • USAPL: there's no approved list for sleeves, only the specs, and you can't have help of any kind putting them on: no second person, plastic bags or powder.
  • USPA and IPL: sleeves are checked against the specs at weigh-in, and raw sleeves can't fasten or adjust. USPA ended its approved equipment list in 2024.

We don't publish a sleeve length, so measure your pair against the 30 cm limit and check with your meet director.

Next step: measure your knee, find your size in the chart above, then choose firm or stiff in our 7mm knee sleeves collection.
